Why did we start Secularly Wed?

The Secularly Wed community and vendor directory will be a place where couples can learn more about wedding traditions, planning tips, and connect with vendors who share their values. We hope to help guide you through planning your secular wedding and set you on a path to an intentional and strong marriage.

There are many couples choosing to have non-religious weddings, but so many of our wedding traditions are steeped in religious significance and values. In my time in the wedding industry, I have met couples who felt it was simply easier to just “go with the flow” and have a religious ceremony, when they themselves are not religious. Such an important moment in your life should reflect your personal beliefs and philosophy, not someone else’s.

Many wedding traditions are religious in origin and others are simply not relevant to all modern couples. At Secularly Wed, we believe it is important to think critically about what traditions couples include in their wedding.

There are no wrong answers here. Every wedding and marriage is deeply personal and the choices and priorities are different for every couple. By thinking through these details of your wedding planning, you set the stage for your future as a couple.

The Secularly Wed community supports people of all beliefs and backgrounds. We value dialogue that challenges societal expectations, and gendered or patriarchal traditions. We encourage you to ask the hard questions, and make the best decisions for you and your partner.

I am looking forward to taking this journey with all of you, couples and vendors alike!
